I know that I lack a lot of personal stuff on the blog, especially lately. I’ve barely had a moment to catch my breath and let my world stop spinning just long enough to see straight, but just last night I realized how desperately I needed to get this off my chest and into the Blog-o-Sphere. So many times I sit down and start writing up the beautiful love stories of those I come in contact with, trying to sum up the amazing detail that brought them together, yet I had never thought that maybe, one day, I’d be writing my own. You may have been out of the loop a little while, but to catch you up to speed, here it is: I get to marry my best friend in just under 2 months. The reality honestly makes tears well up in my eyes, knowing that just a few months ago, she said “Yes”.
I know I’m getting a little ahead of myself, and for that I apologize. I proposed on May 17th, and I wanted to share that moment with you along with the story as to why I did it the way I did. May 17th of last year was our first date. Ashley graciously accepted my poor excuse for an invitation to dinner. We had a blast, and I still remember her opening up the door that night, wearing her favorite color (green) and a scent that was rather intoxicating. We went to Raleigh Times for dinner. We talked, laughed, and shared way more than we both expected too, and when we finally took a second to look around us, all the chairs were on top of the other tables and the wait staff was sweeping the floor. We promptly grabbed our things and headed for the door. It was rainy that night, so I tried to pull a fast one with the umbrella…I grabbed her hand and wrapped it under my arm “so neither of us would get wet”, but she didn’t fall for it (clever girl).
Just before I had completely submitted to the idea that our date was over and that I would have to take her back home, she looked at me with wide eyes and asked, “Do you like surprises?” She then proceeded to take me to the top of a high-rise condo building, where a rooftop pool & cabana overlooked the nighttime Raleigh skyline…I can proudly admit, that was when I knew she could have very well been “the one”.
A year later, on the one year anniversary of our first date, I had it all worked out to take her back to the top of that high rise and celebrate something totally different. Then, when I knew she’d think the surprises were over, I wanted to invite our dearest friends to celebrate with us, back at Raleigh Times. I truly cannot thank everyone enough for helping pull this off. Thank you to Liz Glen for helping me round everyone up, the incredible Mason Bednarczyk for the freaking unbelievable video he made to document the moment, and the amazing Katie Pietrowski for catching the stills that we’ll forever have to look back on. [You can check out her awesome take on it all in her own blogpost] I can’t tell you how much it meant to us both!
I hope you enjoy this as much as I have.
